Periodically we highlight a volunteer who really makes a difference in how we help people saving wildlife, Wonderful Volunteer Wednesday.
“I’ve been following you for a good while now… and I want to help.”
Out of the blue one day I received an email from Khris ready to volunteer. When I saw the skills she had to offer, I was elated.
Why Khris Volunteers…
Q: Where do you live?
A: I’m from Spain.
Q: How did you come to love Africa’s wildlife?
A: I have always been fascinated by Africa. It all started with “The Lion King“, when I was a kid. Some years later I developed the desire of helping out with conservation and sustainability when I discovered Dan Eldon and Peter Beard’s work. I have always loved animals, and I’m constantly looking for ways to help!
Q: How did you find out about Nikela?
A: Researching NGOs and places where to volunteer. It just popped out in Google!
Q: What inspired you to volunteer?
A: I had always wanted to volunteer in a NGO, and when I discovered Nikela I knew I’d found just the right place. It offered a chance to give your time and use your skills, whichever they were, to help wildlife. From wherever in the world you were! Working closely with the Nikela team and knowing you are contributing to a great cause inspires you every day, really. And I make my own schedule to make it work with college and other projects. It’s just the right thing!
Q: What is your Nikela Volunteer assignment?
A: I started playing around with the Pinterest account, and was quickly assigned to manage other social networks such as Twitter and Instagram. We could say I’m part of the social media management team.
Q: Why is saving and protecting our planet’s wildlife and their habitat important to you?
A: Not only important, but also essential and urgent! The 21st century is the environmental century, and not because of its great achievements. There has been so much harm done to Planet Earth –climate change, pollution, species extinctions, deforestation…-, and if we don’t act NOW, we could be paying a high price very soon. To start by taking small steps, such as recycling, taking part on the Meatless Monday movement, or volunteer on your weekends on Nikela… it does count! The actions of one individual can inspire a whole community.
Q: Why do you think it should be important to others?
A: Wildlife has a direct impact on humans, and so does their natural habitat. I think that the well-known American Indian proverb explains it better than I could: “Only when the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, will you realize that you cannot eat money”.
Q: Does your volunteer opportunity benefit you in other ways besides feeling good about doing good, if so how?
A: Yes! It’s a great thing to put on my C.V, and it’s actually helped me get in an international communication program in Norway. It has also contributed hugely to my education in the industry of NGOs and in the (digital) communication area; I’ve learnt a lot in just a few months.
Q: Is there anything else about you that you think our readers/donors would find inspiring/interesting/fun/surprising to learn about you or your experience while volunteering for Nikela?
A: When I was a kid, I told everyone I wanted to change the world. It’s not a statement people take seriously, and curiously, as you grow up, it gets “sillier and sillier”. Well, I don’t know if I can change the world, but I can indeed improve it! In fact, I have already started. I educate myself in important issues, I am active in advocacy, I adopt animals, I recycle, I write about responsible tourism. And I volunteer. You can improve the world, too. Just take that step, and start today.
Thanks Khris… you’re awesome!
