“That brings the total to 92 beehives to protect farms and save elephants!” Wow! Was this ever good news from Moses Ryakitimbo in Tanzania.
This is a dream coming true for this Wildlife Hero who began with an idea, a heart full of hope, and a huge dose of tenacity back in early 2019.
A Village in trouble
When wildlife and humans live in close proximity conflict happens. Lendoiya is a small village near Arusha, Tanzania. Arusha and surrounding area has a population of 739,000 people. (Arusha is Tanzania’s third largest city, with 416,000 people, plus another 323,000 more in the immediate vicinity.)
Amongst all this humanity is the Arusha National Park. This protected wildlife space of 53 square miles is home to elephants and tons of other wildlife. (Including buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog, monkeys, all kinds of antelope and even the elusive leopard.)
In Lendoiya village elephants get themselves in trouble. (When humans and these large pachyderms are neighbors conflict happens.) Right next to the elephants stomping grounds are farm fields. Farmers grow tasty crops like maize which the elephants find irresistible.
About raiding Elephants and Farmers
Elephants have large round feet, about 18inches in diameter. One adult elephant eats up to 300lbs of foliage in a day. When a huge elephant and her friends invade a farm there isn’t much left for the farmer and his family.
Farmers are brave folk. They don’t take their crops being crushed and eaten lightly. They fight back with spears and clubs. This generally doesn’t end well… for the elephants or the farmers.
Moses finds his mission
Enter Moses Ryakitimbo. Moses cares about wildlife and humans and wanted to help. Moses discovered that in other countries bees kept elephants out of farm fields. Unlike we’ve been told, elephants are not afraid of mice, they’re afraid of bees.
Moses formulated a plan to stop the human wildlife conflict in early 2019. He reached out to Nikela for funding.
92 Beehives later
Fast forward to February 2021. Another 36 beehives successfully installed. Bringing the total to 92 beehives… Protecting farms, Saving elephants, and Providing Honey.
To date no elephants have invaded the farms where beehives are present. Crops have grown beautifully. Families have eaten. And no elephants have been injured or killed.
72 More Beehives Needed
According to Moses another 72 beehives are needed to protect all Lendoiya’s farms… and the 1500 plus villagers they feed.
Getting involved is easy. Sponsor a beehive. Get your name on it. Or the name of a loved one.
