This 53 square miles of protected area, near the country’s third largest city, is surrounded by villages. In days gone by elephant herds moved freely up and down much of the continent of Africa. Elephants, like other wild animals, go where there is ample food and water. A senior female elephant, usually known as the Matriarch, leads the herd.
