Visiting Baye at Free to be Wild is always a surprise. Although we’d already stopped by in February it was time to bring the second half of the year’s sponsorship for Khumbulane, her chief handler and right hand man. From one tiny orphaned baboon four years ago Baye developed Bulawayo’s first rescue rehabilitation and release facility. Today she walks us around the sanctuary. Two large primate enclosures are home to a troop of vervet monkeys and chacma baboons. Adjacent to the baboon enclosure is a smaller one with a small gate. Last week in Part 1 of our update of wildlife heroes to watch this year we brought you four. A quick recap… Back in January 2018 we invited you to watch Five Wildlife Heroes making a difference for African animals. This group of five grew to seven. Their work ranges from saving wild lions from irate farmers in Tanzania to protecting elephants and their forest in Malawi. It was back in March 2015 when Baye first reached out to us. Her new wildlife rescue center, Free to be Wild, was in danger of losing its small 6 acre plot in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Baye needed help and we were happy to respond. Now, three years later a confident young rehabber walks into the café to greet us. It has been a bit over two years since we last met here. Baye joined us for breakfast with a newly rescued baby baboon! This time, no animal in tow only confidence. We spend the next hour catching up over lunch….
