For years we thought it too expensive to live like this, but its really not.
The amazing thing we have discovered is OVERLANDING can be done for less than your daily home budget and that includes your plane tickets.
The trick is the camping part. Sure you could spend 4 weeks at the swanky private lodges and game reserves at $200/night plus all the extras adding up to easily $400-500/day. And that leaves you stuck in just a few places. Or spend $75-100/day and see it all in 6 months at your leisure.
Let’s see, rough numbers; Normal tourist couple $400-500/day x 4 weeks x 7 days/week is somewhere around $12-14,000 plus air tickets (business class of course $3500 each).
Or our way $75-100/day for around $2100 – $3000/month ($2500/month our budget) plus plane tickets ($1000 each skinny coach) and that includes the rental of a little red 5 door car that can fit all your camping gear. Do the math… 6 months easy.
Now wait a minute, you’re wondering, what happened to the Land Rover. You’ll invest in that when you fall in love with Africa and make it an annual adventure like us.
We have even met people who OVERLAND all over the world; Africa, South America, even Asia and Russia, driving and living with all they need to be self-sufficient even spare parts in case of breakdown.
Some have literally driven around the world except of course across the oceans. There are not enough gas stations for that yet. ;})
But hold on, what about all those expenses you still have churning at home while you’re gone. If you are like us and don’t have buckets of money you need to make some reasonable changes.
You just have to realize what stuff to dump so you can live in your car. We sold the big house, sold or handed down most of our stuff and fell into the full time RV (Recreation Vehicle) lifestyle.
For us that means a mobile lifestyle at home as well with a ¾ ton 6.6lt diesel pickup pulling a large 5th wheel RV that opens up into a 400 sq-ft efficiency apartment complete with king size bed and washer dryer.
Other than our insurance and fees for the rigs on either side of the pond we have very few expenses other than our travel, communications and a salad or two.
Wow, now that is freedom don’t you think??!! No Debt, no obligations to everyone who “sold” us everything we could live without!!!
But, you say, what about the American Dream with the house next to the golf course and beach…
IT DOESN’T HAVE WHEELS!!! Our possibilities are endless.
ENJOY THE DAY AND DO GOOD!
