We take you out and about with premier primate rehabber Silke at Bambelela. This week The first task the team took on this week was the ‘greener transitory cage’ project, which involved purchasing and rolling out grass into the monkeys’ enclosures. This provided not only enrichment for the monkeys, but also a source of food, making their time at Bambelela as enjoyable as possible before they are released into the wild to live their free life. Over a tonne of corn was very generously provided to the team this week, which will be used to feed the monkeys. With high…

We take you out and about with premier primate rehabber Silke at Bambelela. This week The beginning of this week continued focus on the injured monkey that was taken into care by Bamebelela, after she had been shocked by a power transformer. Sana-Kariba appeared to be feeling much stronger, but there was still a 50/50 chance of saving her arm from amputation.   The team took her to the vet in order to allow him to determine the best outcome for this little girl, and very sadly it was decided she should be put down. The burns she had received…

We take you out and about with premier primate rehabber Silke at Bambelela. This week This week at Bambelala, the team grew rather concerned over Liberty, one of the babies living free as part of Nkawuka’s rehabilitated troop. The team noticed an injury to Liberty’s arm, seemingly appearing to be an open fracture wound. Upon further inspection, the injury was a deep slice to her arm, resulting in some muscle damage but fortunately no fractured bones. After vaccinating her and cleaning the wound, Liberty was already recovering after just a couple of days. Situations such as these highlight how important…

We take you out and about with premier primate rehabber Silke at Bambelela. This week This week saw the arrival of two babies into Bambelela care. The first orphan to arrive, Beau, was found by the team with his mother, who had been killed by human beating. He had a nasty injury as a result of this, but has already healed and settled in nicely, playing with the other orphans in the Nursery. Another arrival, approximately 14 weeks old, was found very frightened and anxious, having lost his mum to hunters. Now at Bambelela, he is slowly relaxing and will…

We take you out and about with premier primate rehabber Silke at Bambelela. This week  This week saw a first for Bambelela, as Amy took under her wing three orphan babies, Winnie, Angie-Frikkie and ZaiZai, comforting and nursing them just 10 days after losing her first born baby, seemingly diverting her grief into love. If this continues, Amy’s nurturing could cut the babies rehabilitation time by 2-3 years, allowing them to go with Amy back into her troop. Becoming Amy’s guardian angel by giving a monthly donation helps towards Amy’s care and feedings, subsequently enabling her to continue caring for…
