Is it Possible to Stop Wildlife Hunting with Dogs?

Is it Possible to Stop Wildlife Hunting with Dogs?

Apr 1, 2021 · by Wildlife Margrit · In: Animal Poaching, Pangolin Tagged: Moses Arineitwe, pangolin, reformed poachers, Uganda, wildlife poaching

Hunting with dogs goes back centuries. Some say archeological evidence suggests that as early as 14,000 years ago prehistoric man partnered with dogs to hunt wildlife. Over time it evolved. Dogs were bred specifically to hunt a targeted species…Pointers birds and Hounds wolves for instance. In Africa today, although colonists bred dogs specifically for hunting (like the Rhodesian Ridgeback) cross breeds are now more commonly used. Dogs are natural predators, and once they’ve tasted blood and raw meat they’re pretty much ready for another kill. There are people living in close proximity to wildlife who take full advantage of this….

The Bearded Lady on a Journey to Save an Endangered Species

The Bearded Lady on a Journey to Save an Endangered Species

Oct 1, 2019 · by Wildlife Margrit · In: Raptors Tagged: Bearded Vulture, breeding program, saving endangered species, Shannon Hoffman

It’s January 2014 (this was pre Land Rover) and we’re in our little red rental car. Finally we’re going to meet the Bearded Lady. We heard about her in 2012 when she was rescued from a chicken coop and we rallied Nikela supporters to help build her a comfortable enclosure at Shannon’s African Raptor Center. Affectionately called the Bearded Lady, she really is a Bearded Vulture. Albeit a very beautiful one. Unlike other vultures who eat dead meat these vultures eat the bones. Isn’t nature’s clean up system amazing? Because she was confined to a chicken coop for so long…

We’re trying hard to do a better job at keeping you posted on our second African Safari north from South Africa to Kenya (this time Ethiopia is in the plan.) So, here is a summary of month two. [Missed month one? Click here for story and video] Happy Birthday Margrit So, only one birthday candle in Margrit’s breakfast cereal? Well, let’s call it a bush cake. And 66 candles, well enough said. We did sing Happy Birthday, saw a John Wayne Movie up in the roof top, and her gift… an 8 month safari in Africa, of course. Broken Back…

Purpose: One of Nine Secrets to Living a Long Life

Purpose: One of Nine Secrets to Living a Long Life

May 22, 2018 · by Wildlife Margrit · In: All Posts, wildlife conservation Tagged: helping people saving wildlife

With the population of first world countries aging, scientists are studying factors contributing to living a long life. Their findings why some live to be a hundred and longer are surprising. Strange how I thought very little about living a long life till I got older. Now I pay attention to studies about centurions. How do people pushing 100 still garden, ride motorcycles and travel around the world? Why do only a select few live to be a century old with a decent quality of life? Well, the scientists identified nine key factors. “Living with Purpose” being one of them….
