Driving through the bush towards Bambelela is always a treat, especially when we’re bringing money to save more monkeys. It’s time to renew our sponsorship of two orphaned monkeys and deliver the funds raised for Silke’s 50th birthday campaign.
The bush is dry. Winter is always a waiting time for the monkeys at Bambelela. The cold weather and limited food delays releases. Like humans, monkeys are more susceptible to illness during winter. Natural food supply in nature is also at a low. With this combination monkeys aren’t moved at this time of the year… not even from enclosure to enclosure. All stress is minimized until the warmer weather and more importantly the rains come.
There’s been another huge stressor at the rehab center. Just 10 days earlier Gert, Silke’s companion and rehab partner passed away suddenly. It’s a severe blow and grief engulfs the center. However, caring for the monkeys keeps everyone going. The focus is on celebrating Gert and what he contributed over the years. He was especially instrumental in securing appropriate release sites. With all the negotiations involved that’s no simple feat.
We visit Nikela, one of the rescued monkeys we sponsor. As always she’s hugging one of the younger orphaned monkeys in Kindergarten. Nikela was actually held back because of her natural nurturing. However, as soon as the weather changes and troops are release she will be moving into a large rehab enclosure with her closest friends and join a new family troop.
MK, the other orphan we sponsor, is doing well. His troop has settled down and bonded nicely. They’re also waiting for the summer rains so they can be moved into a larger enclosure on their road to freedom.
After seeing all the monkeys we settle into our chalet for the night. No rooftop with the wild monkey troops around. In the morning we take our usual walk. This time we find many tracks… not sure of what, and see impala.
After breakfast it’s time for the best part (we’ll almost) to hand over the money to save more monkeys. We give Silke 15,000 Rand. Some goes to sponsor Nikela and MK for another year. The remainder to assist where needed. You can imagine food, medical and other day to day expenses are always pressing at a rehab center.
With your help we’re grateful to be able to do our small part to help save more monkeys at Bambelela. Here we know they are well cared for on their sojourn to living wild again.
