Nikela is about helping people saving endangered animals.
Wildlife Conservation is a Huge Task
You’re probably aware that preserving African animals is an immense task. Many large wildlife conservation organizations are involved as African governments struggle to stay focused. So here’s how Nikela works…
True Wildlife Conservation Heroes
We’ve found that helping the little guys and gals working on the ground, with smaller charitable donations, can make a huge difference. A big difference for endangered species and the not-so endangered animals too. So we spend much of the year in our old Land Rover in search of of real wildlife heroes like these…

This endearing interview by our seven-year-old grand daughter may explain how Nikela works helping people saving African wildlife best.
About Charitable Donations
Do you wonder where the money you donate really goes? Well, you’re not alone. Many non profits have a paid staff. In many cases a percentage of your donation covers salaries and other administrative expenses. NOT WITH NIKELA! 100% of your wildlife donation goes to help people save African wildlife. How can we do that? Because everyone at Nikela is a volunteer who cares about saving Africa’s endangered species.
Nikela’s contributing niche is telling stories, and creating new fundraising ideas to help support the wildlife experts (our Heroes) in the field. Helping to raise some funds and doing what we can to support those who give their all to stop the animal poaching, curb the escalating human wildlife conflict, and simply save one threatened critter at a time. They are our heroes!

We’re Nothing Without YOU
NIKELA is a non profit public charity with 501 (c)(3) status, that operates virtually so that anyone anywhere who cares to give can. 100% of online donations go to the projects. We can do this because we operate via the time and expertise donated by volunteers from around the globe.
Did you know that Nikela, pronounced ‘niˈɠɛ:la’ means “give to” in Zulu?
How We Got Started
NIKELA was founded in early 2010 by Margrit Harris and her husband Russ Harris after a trip to visit Margrit’s parents in South Africa where she was born and raised. Not being independently wealthy, yet wanting to help the dedicated wildlife conservationists they met and learned about; NIKELA was created as a vehicle for people who care, no matter where they live. We give people everywhere a way to get involved, to make a difference by making a small donation and/or volunteering a few hours.
A bird and a $100 bill… yes really!
You might like it that we’re small and because we plan to stay that way. The focus is on:
- Telling the stories of those who make a difference by:
- Raising awareness, touching hearts and hopefully changing behavior.
- Showing that what they do matters and that others care.
- Raising some funds for specific projects like:
- rescue efforts.
- needed equipment.
- veterinary and general care costs.
