Remember the story of the starfish? What each of us do may matter for one wild animal or bird.
An old familiar tale… yet, you may determine how the story ends!
Once upon a time there was a grandmother and her young grandson walking along the beach at sunrise. On this particular morning besides the usual pebbles and sea shells left behind by the high tide, several hundred starfish decorated the sand. Although beautiful, this was not good. Grandma stooped down to pick up a starfish and gently tossed it back into the waves. Then she bent down to pick up another, and another. Her grandson picking up the starfish at his feet, looked at the multitude on the beach before them and said, “Grandma, there are too many, there’s no way we can save them all!” “You are right my boy,” she replied poised with another starfish in her right hand, “but for this one, for this one I can make a difference.” And she tossed it into the waves watching it all the way.
This is generally where the story ends. However, consider this alternative…
The boy, inspired by his grandmother, pulls out his phone, snaps a photo and starts texting. Putting his phone back in his pocket he catches up with his grandmother and bends over to pick up a starfish. In what seems no time at all a handful of people arrive and start picking up starfish. Then more, and more. What first appeared as a daunting, impossible task is accomplished and the hundreds of stranded starfish are given a second chance as one by one they are returned to the sea by a caring human.
