This past year zero elephants were killed!
Every year their work expands. Every year more elephants are protected. Every year more poachers are arrested and prosecuted. Every year more human wildlife conflicts are resolved. This past year other wildlife species began returning to the forest. Guess they know when a place is safe!
Unlike in some other African countries, in Malawi rangers are allowed to apprehend poachers. After the arrest the suspect is handed over to local law enforcement. This past year 33 cases were prosecuted and 29 sentenced. Not bad! This of course may not be happening if Lynn didn’t stay actively involved throughout the process.
Besides patrolling the forest ranger scouts also get involved with a multitude of other projects, like assisting in the treatment of injured wildlife or the collaring of an elephant.
Unfortunately we did not get to Malawi again as planned last year due to my mother’s passing. However spending time with Lynn and her team in the bush is something we look forward to the next go-around.
To continue saving elephants and reducing the human wildlife conflict the ranger scouts are essential. Your comfortable monthly donation makes a tremendous difference.
