Pangolin are the world’s most trafficked mammal! Moses, an ordinary citizen of Uganda, is actively involved in pangolin rescue.
Sadly Moses’ most recent pangolin rescue attempt failed. After several successful pangolin rescues it was unfortunately bound to happen.
Moses educates as he goes along. Almost daily more local villagers join the ranks of his informants. These become his eyes and ears across the region of Uganda surrounding the Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest stretching across the border into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
On this occasion Moses arrives too late. The young pangolin is not doing well. His captor a local poor villager is looking for a buyer. Pangolin body parts are sold for bush meat. Either for consumption or traditional medicine. On a much larger, more devastating scale, pangolin are sold illegally and exported to countries like China. Here their scales are used by the millions.
Moses is able to intervene. The pangolin is not sold as the authorities are called in. However, the young pangolin has been held captive too long and dies.
Although very disappointed Moses uses the opportunity to educate those gathering around. In particual the poacher who is later arrested. As the pangolin is on the highly endangered species list it is a crime punishable by imprisonment to be caught trafficking one.
One of the reasons Moses arrived too late is transportation. The cost thereof. Although he now has access to a vehicle, frequently getting the funds together to buy the necessary fuel creates delays.
