Powerful memories came flooding back as I reviewed Karin’s application for funding. It was such a great experience to visit her last year. Talk about living in harmony with wildlife.
This fascinating young woman’s compound is in an indigenous forest amongst troops of baboons and vervet monkeys. She understands and interacts with them better than you do with your own children (that may not be such a good comparison if your child is a teenager).
Working with primates her message is: “My mind’s forest had formed new paths… something internal had stirred and woken up… offering a unique glimpse into our place within the rest of nature. More importantly, it revealed what we’d lost and how to retrieve it.” Karin Saks
More than a marvelous philosopher and researcher, Karin makes a practical difference with her rehab and education programs. Because of her work over the past 12 years, the baboons and monkeys are a bit safer especially with the citizens of the Garden Route in South Africa.
