You ever get nervous about donating?
Do you wonder where the money really goes? Well, you’re not alone. Most nonprofits have a paid staff. In most cases a percentage of your donation covers salaries and other administrative expenses. NOT WITH NIKELA! 100% of your gift goes to help people save wildlife. How can we do that? Because everyone at Nikela is a volunteer who cares. Now that we’ve got that out of the way let’s move on.
NIKELA is about helping people saving wildlife.
Preserving Africa’s wildlife is an immense task. Many large organizations are involved as African governments struggle to stay focused. Nikela’s contributing niche is telling stories, raising some funds and doing what we can to support those who give their all to stop the rhino poaching, curb the escalating wildlife trafficking industry and end canned lion hunting.
Why we’re nothing without YOU…
NIKELA is a public charity with 501 (c)(3) status, that operates virtually so that anyone anywhere who cares to give can. 100% of online donations go to the projects. We can do this because we operate via the time and expertise donated by volunteers from around the globe.
By the way, did you catch it? Nikela, pronounced ‘niˈɠɛ:la’ means “give to” in Zulu.
How we got started…
NIKELA was founded in early 2010 by Margrit Harris and her husband Russ after a trip to visit Margrit’s parents in South Africa where she was born and raised. Not being independently wealthy, yet wanting to help the dedicated wildlife conservationists they met and learned about, NIKELA was created as a vehicle for people who care no matter where they live to get involved and make a difference by making a small donation and/or volunteering a few hours.
Focusing on the most important…
As a small volunteer run nonprofit we must be realistic, here is our focus:
- Tell the stories of those who make a difference in the fight to end rhino poaching to:
- Raise awareness, touch hearts and change behavior.
- Show that what they do matters and that others care.
- Raise some funds for specialty equipment (e.g. thermal imaging cameras)
- [Just added] Initiate the sponsoring of select local college students to serve as volunteers at targeted conservation sites.
Our recent 10 week Africa Wildlife Conservation Tour calibrated our approach quite a bit. Here you’ll find the details: “Nikela Adjusts Focus After Africa Willdife Tour 2014”
If you care to get involved, give us a shout. You can of course make a donation (remember nobody gets paid, your gift does not go towards admin costs, but to help save wildlife) or volunteer without leaving your home using your laptop or tablet.
We look forward to having you join us.
