NIKELA is about helping people saving wildlife
You’re probably aware that preserving Africa’s wildlife is an immense task. Many large wildlife conservation organizations are involved as African governments struggle to stay focused.
The ‘little guys’
We’ve found that helping the little guys and gals working on the ground, with smaller amounts of money, can make a huge difference. These are real wildlife heroes.
True wildlife heroes
- Moses who reforms animal poachers
- Lynn who protects the forgotten elephants and their forest
- Silke who gives orphaned baby monkeys new families
- Philipo who saves lions with lights
- Natalie who raises baby rhino orphaned by poachers
- Shannon who protects the lions of the skies.
Maybe this endearing interview by our seven year old grand daughter explains it best
Because you might get nervous about donating
Do you wonder where the money you give really goes? Well, you’re not alone. Most nonprofits have a paid staff. In most cases a percentage of your donation covers salaries and other administrative expenses. NOT WITH NIKELA! 100% of your gift goes to help people save wildlife. How can we do that? Because everyone at Nikela is a volunteer who cares. Now that we’ve got that out of the way let’s move on.
Nikela’s contributing niche is telling stories, raising some funds and doing what we can to support those who give their all to stop the animal poaching, curb the escalating human wildlife conflict, and simply save one threatened critter at a time. They are our heroes!
Bet you can’t help falling-in-love with them too!
Why we’re nothing without YOU
NIKELA is a public charity with 501 (c)(3) status, that operates virtually so that anyone anywhere who cares to give can. 100% of online donations go to the projects. We can do this because we operate via the time and expertise donated by volunteers from around the globe.
By the way, did you catch it? Nikela, pronounced ‘niˈɠɛ:la’ means “give to” in Zulu.
How we got started
NIKELA was founded in early 2010 by Margrit Harris and her husband Russ after a trip to visit Margrit’s parents in South Africa where she was born and raised. Not being independently wealthy, yet wanting to help the dedicated wildlife conservationists they met and learned about, NIKELA was created as a vehicle for people who care, no matter where they live. Give people anywhere a way to get involved, to make a difference by making a small donation and/or volunteering a few hours.
A bird and a $100 bill… yes really!
Focusing on the most important
You might like it that we’re small and plan to stay that way. The focus is on:
- Telling the stories of those who make a difference to:
- Raise awareness, touch hearts and hopefully change behavior.
- Show that what they do matters and that others care.
- Raising some funds for specific projects like:
- Rescue efforts.
- Needed equipment.
- Vet and general care costs.
Check out the Impact We’ve Made (with the help of people like you.)
Each year Margrit and Russ travel Africa in their old Land Rover personally meeting with those we support.
You’re invited to join the adventure to save Africa’s wildlife
If you care to get involved, give us a shout. You can of course make a donation (remember nobody gets paid, 100% of your gift goes to help save wildlife) or volunteer without leaving your home using your laptop or tablet.
